Meet a Jakarta SAT Tutor: Aaron T.
Aaron T. grew up in Montpelier, Vermont, and moved to Boston at a young age. "I've been into pictures and visual arts for as long as I can remember," he recalls with a smile. "I can't write a story to save my life, but I can illustrate anything someone else has written." Aaron was extremely popular in his neighborhood for creating flyers and local advertisements for his childhood friends, announcing lemonade stands, garage sales, and pet-sitting services. "At first, it was just me creating signs for my friends, but one day my friends' parents started asking me to create things for them, like logos and business cards and even branding ideas." Aaron quickly took to his unexpected entrepreneurship, and "the first time I got paid for creating art, I thought I was the most successful person in the entire world!"
Aaron dreamed of pursuing a degree in graphic design at Boston University but knew being admitted to the respected and competitive school would be challenging. He began working with a private tutor who was a retired teacher, to prepare for the SAT, in addition to taking a group prep course sponsored by his high school. Aaron learned how to approach each question in order to apply the most effective solution, and while he was originally nervous about preparing for such an important test, after a while, his anxiety noticeably decreased, "probably because I'd taken so many practice tests, I was filling them out in my sleep," he laughs. "But in all seriousness, I was so prepared and so familiar with the test that I was able to be calm and focused on the day of the actual exam, and I know that contributed to my final score." Aaron's hard work and dedication paid off, and he earned an impressive SAT score that placed him in the top two percent of all test-takers. Combined with his high grades and involvement in sports and extracurricular organizations, plus his impressive art portfolio, Aaron was admitted to Boston University, to the delight of his parents, tutor, and teachers.
After graduating with a degree in graphic design, Aaron accepted a position with an advertising firm in New York City, and as he worked to build up his client roster, he also began taking on freelance work, finding projects that excited and inspired him. He accepted a position as a faculty member at a respected art school and discovered how much he enjoyed teaching and sharing various types of art with students. This led him to pursue a graduate degree in education from New York University, and when his advertising company offered him the chance to transfer to their office in Jakarta, Aaron jumped at the chance to explore more of the world. Aaron loved living in Jakarta, and while his advertising job was thriving, he realized he missed working with students. "I wanted to do more than just educate the public about companies or products…I wanted to have a positive impact directly on people's lives." When a rare position opened up at the Jakarta office of Manhattan Review, Aaron submitted an application, and we couldn't have been happier to welcome him to the team. "There are a lot of similarities between tutoring and working with ad clients," Aaron explains. "In both instances, I'm presenting someone with something I want them to remember. The question is, what's the best way to help the material make enough of an impact so that it is, in fact, memorable?" Aaron's students love working with him, especially those who are visual learners and appreciate his ability to use pictures to teach complex concepts. When he isn't preparing the next generation of college students, Aaron can be found skateboarding with his girlfriend, volunteering at a local animal rescue shelter, and offering free art lessons at a local after-school program.
