While many students perform well in classroom-style group courses, finding others' comments insightful and helpful, other students know they do not perform at their best in group settings. They worry about slowing the group down because they need additional time to master a concept, or they experience frustration and boredom because they cannot move on to studying a new concept until everyone in the group has demonstrated a sufficient level of mastery. If you know you learn best through one-on-one instruction customized specifically to your learning- and test-related needs, consider working with one of Manhattan Review's experienced private tutors. Our private tutors are eager to design a personalized LSAT course of study just for you, and preparing for the LSAT begins with pairing you with just the right tutor. Your private tutor will work closely to understand your unique learning style, identifying and leveraging the academic strengths you already possess while teaching you to avoid costly mistakes that could negatively impact your LSAT performance. When you work with a private tutor, you set the pace, allowing study sessions to be targeted, focusing on specific challenges, as well as comprehensive, ensuring you know what to expect on the day of your exam and do not experience any surprises.

The LSAT is purposefully designed to assess the skills required for the first year of law school. These skills include reading comprehension, reasoning, and writing. LSAT scores fall in a range between 120 to 180, with the median score being approximately 152. A median score, however, will not be enough to secure acceptance to a top-tier law school, and competitive scores generally fall in the 160s to 170s. The Law School Admission Council (LSAC) is the organization responsible for the administration of the LSAT, and they regularly track and report statistical information about those who take the test, analyzing their information as a whole while also dividing test-takers into subgroups. According to the LSAC, among the most respected law schools, successful applicants have an LSAT score in the 170s. In order to be competitive for the highest-ranking law schools, it is necessary to do well on the LSAT. We at Manhattan Review can help you master all sections of the test, improving your reading comprehension and reasoning abilities while also strengthening your critical writing skills.

Meet a Jakarta LSAT Tutor: Jan W.

Jan W. was born and raised in Munich, Germany, and can't remember a time when he wasn't fascinated by words, losing himself in any book or reading material he could get his hands on. "I was constantly reading as a child and wanted books as presents for every birthday and holiday," he recalls with a laugh. "I was so amazed at how so many people could take the same basic words and create completely different stories with such incredibly different information." Jan enjoyed writing his own short stories, which he occasionally shared with his family, and he found himself drawn to the rules of grammar and writing, "which wasn't exactly considered normal for a teenage boy," he shares with a grin. Jan's family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, the summer before he started high school, and while it was a significant transition, Jan soon made friends and enjoyed being a part of his new community. At his school, he worked his way up from a contributing reporter to the editor of the entire newspaper. He worked as one of three editors on the yearbook and hosted a bi-weekly podcast offering practical writing tips and discussing the writing of popular books. He won numerous awards for his essays and research papers, and it wasn't long before he found himself tutoring his friends and classmates on the finer points of writing in the English language.

Jan performed very well on the ACT and thanks to his test score, plus his high school grades and involvement in extracurricular activities, he was accepted at colleges across the United States. He ultimately chose to attend Emory University, and during his sophomore year, he had the chance to attend a lecture by a visiting professor who was also a lawyer specializing in contract negotiation. Jan was surprised to learn there was a job that revered words and language as much as he did. "That's when I knew I wanted to be a lawyer…not like on tv, arguing cases in front of a jury, but the kind who worked behind the scenes on important documents that could make or break mergers, acquisitions, or trade deals." Jan worked as an English tutor in his university's learning lab, but when it came time to prepare for the LSAT, he switched from being the tutor to being the one tutored. Jan worked with a private tutor through Manhattan Review, and by following the study syllabus created specifically for him, he was able to take the LSAT with confidence. His hard work and dedication were rewarded with an exceptionally high score, and he received numerous offers of admission from prestigious law programs before he decided to attend Vanderbilt University, respected world-wide for its contract law program.

After graduating from Vanderbilt, Jan was offered a job with a firm in Jakarta, and while the work was challenging, he appreciated the flexibility the position offered, frequently allowing him to work from home. "A lot of contract law these days is just emailing documents back and forth until clients are satisfied," he explains, "and I found myself looking for ways to connect with others in the legal field, particularly those just getting started or hoping to get started." With years of both informal and formal tutoring behind him, Jan became an immediate asset when he joined the Manhattan Review Jakarta team. The students he works with through private tutoring are consistently impressed at his thorough preparation and ability to explain even the most challenging legal concept in an easily memorable way. They also benefit from learning his techniques for understanding exactly what a question is or is not asking, allowing them to apply the most effective strategy to arrive at the correct solution. When he isn't guiding future lawyers to LSAT success, Jan can be found traveling and exploring throughout Southeast Asia, learning to cook traditional Indonesian dishes, and completing crossword puzzles.
