Jakarta is the capital and largest city in Indonesia, serving as an important economic, cultural, and political center from its position on Java, the most populous island in the world. As the largest city in Southeast Asia, Jakarta has experienced significant growth over the past few decades and strives to find ways to honor and respect the past while embracing the exciting opportunities of the future. Jakarta serves as the seat of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), an economic and political union of ten member states that seeks to promote cooperation between governments by facilitating economic, political, military, educational, and sociocultural integration between union members. The metropolitan area of Jakarta includes the satellite cities of Bogor, Depok, Tangerang, South Tangerang, and Bekasi, and this thriving urban area has a population of more than 35 million people, earning it the important distinction of being the largest urban area in Indonesia and the second largest urban area in the world after Tokyo. Thanks to developing businesses and extensive employment opportunities, those who live in Jakarta enjoy a higher standard of living than in some other parts of the country, and this ancient civilization consistently attracts migrants from all over Southeast Asia seeking to improve their education, employment, or personal lives.
Jakarta was established in the fourth century after being one of the oldest and most continuously inhabited cities in Southeast Asia, serving as an important trading port before acting as the unofficial capital of the Dutch East Indies. In 1960, Jakarta was changed from a city to a province with the distinction of being a special capital region. Those who are unfamiliar with this thriving metropolis might be surprised to know Jakarta is an alpha world city and home to the Bank of Indonesia and the Indonesia Stock Exchange, as well as the headquarters of numerous multinational corporations. Companies such as Bristol Meyers-Squibb, Coca Cola, Dow Chemical, General Motors, Johnson & Johnson, Merrill Lynch, Mobil, and Procter & Gamble have offices and economic investments in Jakarta, and there continues to be a dynamic mixture of foreign-owned and local-owned businesses.
Jakarta is proud to be the home of numerous educational institutions, including the University of Indonesia, which is the largest and oldest tertiary-level educational organization in Indonesia. Other public universities include Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University of Jakarta and the University of Pembangunan Nasional ‘Veteran' Jakarta. Major private universities include Triskai University, The Christian University of Indonesia, Mercu Buana University, and Tarumanagara university, to name but a few. Education is valued among those who live in Jakarta, and there are many international primary and secondary schools, among which the Gandhi Memorial International School, IEPKA International Christian School, Jakarta Intercultural School, and the British School Jakarta are especially well-known and seek to provide a strong foundational education that will take aspiring students wherever they want to go.
While the Betawi people form the indigenous community of Jakarta, the city has expanded to represent numerous languages and ethnicities, with each culture retaining those aspects that make it unique and distinct from others. Arts and cultural exhibitions are popular in Jakarta, and whatever your interests may be, there is certain to be a festival or celebratory event for you. Popular festivals include the Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival, Djakarta Warehouse Project, Jakarta Fashion Week, Jakarta Fashion & Food Festival, Jakarnaval, and the Indonesia International Book Fair, to name but a few of the exciting events. Art Jakarta is a contemporary art fair held annually, and Flona Jakarta is a flora-and-fauna exhibition held each year in Lapangan Banteng Park, featuring gorgeous flowers and plant nurseries. Jakarta Fair is a month-long celebration to commemorate the anniversary of the city and features entertainment and musical performances. The Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival is one of the largest jazz events in the world and the largest jazz festival in the Southern Hemisphere.
In addition to inspiring music and arts, food lovers will find plenty of reasons to celebrate throughout Jakarta, as the city features an extensive variety of Indonesian cuisine. Betawi cuisine is considered the "local" cuisine and is heavily influenced by Malay-Chinese Paranakan food, as well as Sudanese and Javanese cuisine, which in turn are strongly influenced by Indian, Arabic, and European recipes. Much of the food in Jakarta is purchased from warung food stalls lining the streets, and popular Betawi dishes include Soto Betawi (chunks of beef and offal in rich, spicy cow's milk or coconut milk), kerak telor (a spicy omelette), gado-gado Betawi (salad in peanut sauce), nasi uduk (rice cooked in coconut milk), bakso (meatballs), pecel lele (fried catfish), and sate (skewered meats). Street food lovers may find themselves spending a significant amount of time in Jalan Sabang, Jalan Sidoarjo, and Jalan Kendal at Menteng area, while newer and trendier cafes and restaurants can be found at Menteng, Kemang, and Jalan Senopati.
Manhattan Review has helped a wide variety of Jakarta-area students pursue their individual academic goals: attending graduate school via the GMAT and GRE, college via the SAT and ACT, law school via the LSAT, and learning and demonstrating proficiency with the English language via the TOEFL and IELTS. Students have paired the guidance they have received with their own dedication and hard work, earning themselves coveted acceptance offers to top-tier colleges and universities, including Harvard University, Stanford University, MIT, Yale University, Princeton University, Columbia University, New York University, the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Southern California, Oxford University, the University of Cambridge, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Pennsylvania, and Dartmouth College, to name but a few. Former Manhattan Review clients have used their stellar educations to establish meaningful and successful careers around the globe, counting their work with us as a significant contributor to their well-deserved success. If you, too, seek collegiate and professional success, we encourage you to contact us today to find out how we can partner with you in achieving your goals and making your dreams come true.

Meet a Jakarta Tutor: Hunter S.
Hunter S. grew up in California and lived in San Francisco as a child. His mother was a professor at a local respected university, and he recalls being fortunate to grow up in a home where learning was both valued and enjoyed. "Ever since I can remember, I wanted to be a teacher, like my mother," Hunter recalls. "I remember going and sitting in the lecture halls where she was teaching and watching everyone listen to what she taught…I knew I wanted to make a difference in people's lives in such an important way." Hunter worked exceptionally hard in high school, hosting a podcast where he reviewed current events and interviewed fellow students and teachers, in addition to competing in varsity cross-country, track, soccer, and swimming. He chaired a variety of different extracurricular committees and even won an award at a model United Nations conference. When it came time to apply to college, Hunter participated in a group tutoring course to help him master every aspect of the SAT. He also completed a few private lessons with an instructor to focus on the specific areas of test preparation he found most challenging. Hunter scored in the top percentile of those students who took the SAT and had his pick of colleges and universities to choose from. While his family was sad to see him move all the way across the country, they also supported his decision to obtain an education from Harvard University.
Hunter loved his time at Harvard, and he made new friends and strong professional connections that have continued to play an important role in his career. After graduating with an undergraduate degree in education, Hunter was accepted to Columbia University, a U.S. News & World Report Top 10 School for Education. After graduating with a master's degree in education, he accepted a position in a public school working with underserved high school students. Although the work was often difficult, Hunter loved interacting with his students and felt a quiet pride at knowing he was making a difference, one student at a time. He was frequently offered the chance to accept promotions that involved moving into an administrative position, but he preferred to stay where he was, working directly with the students who needed him most.
Shortly after getting married, Hunter's wife was offered a chance to relocate to Jakarta. While Hunter was nervous about what the move might mean for his teaching career, he was also excited about moving to a new city in a country he'd never visited before. "I knew nothing about Jakarta before moving here," he laughs, "and now I'm like, how did I not learn about this amazing place sooner?" Hunter quickly found a job teaching English and appreciated how hard his students worked and how eager they were to learn a new language. When a position opened up at the Jakarta office of Manhattan Review, Hunter applied and was quickly welcomed to the team. Regardless of the test Hunter is helping his students prepare for, his clients appreciate his organization, dedication, and passion for education. When he isn't helping the next generation of students prepare for their own exciting professions, Hunter can be found eating local street food, exploring the Fatahillah Museum, and spending time in Merdeka Square enjoying the footpaths, wooded areas, and impressive water features.
