The ACT is intended to reflect what students learned during high school and is composed of four multiple-choice tests—English, mathematics, reading, and science—as well as an optional writing portion. Meet a Jakarta ACT Tutor: Stellan R.

Stellan grew up in Michigan and credits the long winters for sparking his interest in science. "There are only so many shows you can watch and so much hockey you can play," he laughs. "When you live with six months or more of snow, you start to go a little stir-crazy stuck indoors all day, which is what prompted my dad to get me a book on science experiments." Growing up with his dad and younger brother, Stellan appreciated how supportive his family was of his love of learning, even when that meant trying experiments that didn't always turn out as planned. "The ceiling in my dad's kitchen is still stained orange in parts, thanks to the lava that exploded from a motorized volcano," admits Stellan. "I definitely accidentally started more than one fire, and I stained my hands blue for a week one time." In high school, Stellan was president of the Science Club and hosted a bi-weekly science-themed podcast, where he discussed advances in technology "in ways non-nerds could understand." While Stellan's school didn't have an official peer tutoring program, he and his friends worked hard to help one another. Stellan tutored his friends in biology, chemistry, and physics and in return received help with English assignments and essays, "which I very much needed and greatly appreciated," he recalls.

Stellan dreamed of being a science educator and decided to take the ACT rather than the SAT, given the inclusion of a science section on the ACT. When the educational consulting company he worked for later mentioned an open position for an English-speaking science teacher at an international school in Jakarta, Stellan leaped at the chance and moved overseas, ready for another academic adventure.
